Center for Mental Health Service - The Center for Mental Health Service (CMHS), as part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, pursues its mission by helping States improve and increase the quality and range of their treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for people with mental illness, their families, and communities. Further, it encourages a range of programs-such as systems of care-to respond to the increasing number of mental, emotional, and behavioral problems among America's children.

New Freedom Commission on Mental Health - President George W. Bush established the controversial President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health in April, 2002, to conduct a comprehensive study of the United States mental health service delivery system and make recommendations based on their findings.

Confederation of Health Service Employees - COHSE, the Confederation of Health Service Employees, was a United Kingdom trade union representing workers primarily in the National Health Service. It was founded in 1946 with the merger of the Mental Hospital and Institutional Workers Union and the Hospital and Welfare Services Union, with the aim of having one union to represent workers in the National Health Service on its formation.

In Recovery: The Making of Mental Health Policy

For hundreds of years, people diagnosed with mental illness were thought to be hopeless cases, destined to suffer inevitable deterioration. Beginning in the early 1990s, however, providers mental health service and policymakers in mental health systems came to promote recovery as their goal. But what does recovery truly mean? For example, to consumers of mental health services, it implies empowerment mental health service and greater resources dedicated to healing; to HMOs, it can suggest a means of cost savings when benefits cease upon recovery. This book considers "recovery" from multiple angles. Traditionally, Nora Jacobson notes, recovery was defined as symptom abatement or a return to a normal state of health, but as activists, mental health professionals, mental health service and policymakers sought to develop "recovery-oriented" systems, other meanings emerged. Jacobson's analysis describes the complexes of ideas that have defined recovery in various contexts over time. The first meaning, "recovery-as-evidence," involves the theories, statistics, therapies, legislation, mental health service and myriad other factors that constituted the first one hundred years of mental health services provision in the United States. "Recovery-as-experience" brought the voices of patients into the conversation, while "recovery-as-ideology" drew on both recovery-as-evidence mental health service and recovery-as-experience to rally support for specific approaches mental health service and service-delivery models. This in turn became the basis for "recovery-as-policy," which developed as assorted representative bodies, such as commissions mental health service and task forces, planned reforms of the mental health system. Finally, "recovery-as-politics" emerged as reformers confronted harsh economic realities mental health service and entrenched ideas about evidence,experience, mental health service and ideology. Throughout, Jacobson draws on her research in Wisconsin, a state with a long history of innovation in mental health services.
